My colleague Dr. Izabella Wentz and her amazing team have produced a powerful 9-part documentary called The Thyroid Secret and it truly is groundbreaking!
Thyroid disease is one of the most overlooked diseases and is so often misdiagnosed. I see this all this time with my anxious clients.
Dr. Izabella is a dear friend of mine and suffered for years with chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety and panic attacks simply because she didn’t know she had a thyroid condition. She saw many doctors and they all said “Your labs are normal.” When she finally did get her Hashimoto’s diagnosis she still couldn’t find a doctor to help her so she read and researched and figured out her own solution! And now her mission is to share what she has learned so you don’t have to suffer like she did!
She shares this in her interview with Andrea Nakayama:
It’s really really important for a person to realize that how much control they have in their own situation, and how powerful they really are. They can help themselves.
Of course, having a coach, having a guide, having somebody who has maybe done it before with themselves or with other patients helps.
This documentary is one of your guides to educate and empower you!
If you resonate with any of these symptoms then I encourage you to join us:
- Fatigue

Dr. Izabella has gathered over 100 of the TOP experts in integrative thyroid treatment to unmask the confusion and misinformation surrounding thyroid issues.
I’m honored and thrilled to have been invited to participate in the documentary!
Here is a snippet from my interview:
I’ve got an underactive thyroid. I discovered that at the same time that I was working with the naturopath, and we supported [my thyroid] nutritionally. I still need to really take care of my thyroid. The interesting thing is, a lot of the nutrients that help with anxiety also help with thyroid health. One of them is zinc, a really important nutrient for anxiety. When you’ve got low zinc levels you’ll feel more anxious, you’re prone to panic attacks, and zinc is one of the key nutrients for thyroid health.
Gluten is a factor for autoimmune thyroid conditions. I’ve got a gluten issue and I can’t eat gluten at all, so getting rid of that [out of my diet] helped my anxiety, and it also gave my thyroid a chance to recover.
There are a lot of overlaps between anxiety and thyroid problems.
A lot of people go to the doctor and get a diagnosis, you’ve got anxiety, or you’ve got depression, and they’ll be given a medication: benzodiazepine or an SSRI. It may be the thyroid that’s causing the problems.
It’s common knowledge that thyroid problems can cause depression. It’s less well recognized that thyroid problems can actually contribute to anxiety.
I actually looked at a study that was published in 2010, and they found that there was three times higher incidence of anxiety in women who have an underactive thyroid. It’s more common than a lot of people realize.
Certainly in my practice, working with anxious women (most of the people that I work with are women, I work with men as well) – most of the women that I work with, with anxiety, have thyroid issues. They either have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, they have hypothyroidism, or they may have had Graves’ in the past. It’s very, very common that I see this.
Dr. Izabella also interviewed over 50 thyroid patients who share their personal and sometimes heartbreaking stories. I love this aspect because it helps us realize that we are not alone and there is hope!

Oh goodie, another documentary to convince me that I must have a Thyroid disorder! Everyone is so good at telling you what things to look out for to identify a possible Thyroid condition, but no one is telling all of us who we can go see to help ourselves and our condition. All of these webinars urging is to address our symptoms, and emphasizing how important our Thyroid gland is. What WE all need assistance with is WHO, meaning doctor can we go to to have this issue taken seriously and resolved. I know I am not alone in feeling completely overwhelmed with trying to locate someone, in my Srate who can help me. It’s getting almost obnoxious how many emails I receive about the Thyroid gland. I KNOW that I have a Thyroid issue, I’ve been diagnosed before. But in the here and now, I’ve got NOBODY to help me fix this problem. This is not about a diet and if I just ate better….I need help, NOW. If anyone knows someone who is qualified in the state of Florida, please let me know.

Hi Ann
I’m really glad to hear you already know you have thyroid issues. You are fortunate! Sadly many have not yet been diagnosed and this is where educational series like The Thyroid Secret will be so helpful and very empowering.
I would actually encourage you to watch the documentary too. I have seen a preview of it and learned so much myself. New research, new protocols, new labs and new root causes are being shared. You’re so right – it’s not only just about diet but toxins, liver support and infections and much much more
As far as finding a doctor to work with, Dr Izabella has a directory of clinicians that have been recommended by her patients and have read her first book. You can find this here https://thyroidpharmacist.com/contact/ She does interview over 100 practitioners in the documentary too and you may find someone who resonates with you too.

Hi Ann,
I feel the exact same way as you do. Im so frustrated. You all make it sound so simple but I also can’t find someone to help me. My dr.s literally don’t know what they are doing. I have a nodule, and now they think I might have a goitre and I am having trouble swallowing for the last 5 years and they tell me it’s anxiety and have given me antidepressants. I’m on levothyroxine which I feel intuitively is harming me. I need serious help, I have alot of these symptoms. Can you give me a name of someone in Toronto, Canada who can help me. I’m seriously not well and I want to get better.
Thank you for listening – please, please help.
Mary

I hear you – it’s frustrating when we know what is going on and can’t find someone to help us!
If it’s any help – you’re not alone in this – I am actually in this situation right now having just moved to a new continent!

Hi Girls, Mary and Ann. I hear you guys loud and clear!! I too have hypothyroidism but thought I was being treated properly with a naturopath. He even wrote a book about it. I was first diagnosed with hashimotos, so for years he was treating that. When I changed drs to a functional medicine doc she retested me and said, No I do not have hashimotos! Shocked me so much I cried. But I too have nodules. There is a website you guys could go to for info. Its called Stop the Thyroid Madness. One gal on there has an article of how she got rid of her nodules using selenium and iodine. So check it out and get as much info as you can about your condition before you listen to the seminar. If nothing else you will understand the seminars vocabulary and get more out of it. I’m really looking forward to it. But adrenals and thyroid go hand in hand and is sometimes hard to know which symptoms are caused by which gland and which gland is causing the other to get upset. My body plays that one all the time. Just thought I would let you know their are MANY women who are in your spot. But even if you think you have the right doc doesn’t mean it is. love to you both…

I’m sorry to hear what you went through! Often our health challenges are so complex it’s difficult for the most well-meaning doctor to get it right. Thanks for offering encouragement to Mary and Ann -it’s always helpful to know we’re not alone in this!
I’m very curious what was used to give the initial Hashimoto’s diagnosis and then why the retesting indicated no Hashimoto’s? I assume both antibodies were tested (thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin)? I wonder if the 2nd time the antibodies had gone low enough to be normal (so what the first doctor had recommended was really working)?
And yes to listening and learning and reading as much as you can so you’re educated and empowered. I learn from Dr. Izabella on a daily basis because there is always something new to consider, new research and new connections.
Enjoy the Thyroid Secret – I’ve had a sneak peek and you won’t be disappointed. I also just interviewed Dr. Izabella and will be sharing that via a blog and newsletter as soon as it’s been edited and transcribed so look out for that – it was brilliant! Oh and this week’s blog and newsletter features Dr. Izabella speaking on thyroid and depression/anxiety at the Functional Forum (it’s going out Saturday)
Kaye says
Hi Trudy, When I was first tested, the doc only did the thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and not the thryroglobulin. My functional doc said they both have to be high for hashis. When she redid the test and tested both, they were normal. First doc had me on levothyroxine with time released T3. So with new doc we tried armour but my body didn’t like it, my numbers got worse. So, we tried Westhroid and low and behold my TSH went down to 1.9, my T4 and T3 both went to high normal. So I was a happy camper til I refilled Westhroid in I think Nov. and the company changed formula to WP thyroid. I went online and it said its the same, but with less, for lack of better word “chemicals”. So I thought okay should be okay. Now two months out and Im losing my hair, fatigue and smatterings of angst raising its ugly head again and gaining weight and overall edema. Feels like I’m a sausage in my clothes. My functional med. dr just did bloodwork on Thurs and got info back today. My TSH raised to 2.99 and my T4 dropped to just above normal. So looks like things are going the wrong way! BUT this last month we found that my husband had stomach cancer so we have been living in the hospital for a month ( I wont go into that here) so I was thinking its the stress but could be the change in meds too! and of course taking care of my hubbie I didn’t get to doc right away even knowing something was wrong with me. Again hard to say……. the thyroid is so very tricky. I will say tho. that the numbers from the Westhroid were the BEST I have had in 10 years. When I was on levo/T3 we could never get it stable and was on an every two months check with blood. So even when you are trying to advocate for yourself, things slip through the cracks. And not because of me.

Kaye
What a runaround you have had! Not good! I’m also so sorry to hear about your husband.
As I mentioned to Carlene, you’ll learn from her documentary (and upcoming book Hashimoto’s Protocol) there is much more to all this than the thyroid meds. Obviously diet is a big factor but there is more. I just interviewed her (will be sharing as soon as it’s edited) and we talked about SIBO and parasites.
Here is a snippet from her book: “If you have Hashimoto’s and you’ve had difficulty going into remission, there is a significant chance that you have an infection. Up to 80 percent of my clients who don’t go into remission with dietary changes have tested for one or more infections using functional medicine testing”
By the way, this is simply not true:”My functional doc said they both have to be high for hashis” so yes “even when you are trying to advocate for yourself, things slip through the cracks.”
Kaye says
HI Trudy, I just went back to the Westhroid website and I guess they do carry both products. Westhroid and WPthyroid so they must have subbed at pharmacy! I’m not sure what happened. BUT from website it looks like the WPthyroid would be better because it doesn’t have the added chemicals. Hmmm maybe its the stress thats causing havoc with my thyroid. Not liking this at all. My guess would be that Functional doc will raise the dose.
Carleen Rowan says
Hi Trudy,
Same problem as the other women. My endo is a FACE with all kinds of peer reviewed articles and is considered “the expert” in my area. He only believes in running TSH and T 4. Had to pay Direct Labs to do a more complete thyroid panel and found out I am not converting T4 to T3 very well. Was on Synthroid–now he has put me on Armour. Been on it 10 days–don’t feel a bit better, maybe worse–seem a lot more anxious. It is great having the info, but the traditional endo is pretty useless in a lot of respects. I think I will get more help from my ND, whom I have hired to help me with SIBO. It is kind of sad when you know more than your doctor, but he won’t listen to you!
Trudy Scott says
Carleen
Gosh this is so unfortunate to get the run-around like this. Dr. Izabella is trying hard to change this, educating those with thyroid problems AND educating practitioners.
As you’ll learn from her documentary (and upcoming book Hashimoto’s Protocol) there is much more to all this than the thyroid meds. Obviously diet is a big factor but there is more. I just interviewed her (will be sharing as soon as it’s edited) and we talked about SIBO and parasites.

Up to 80 percent of my clients who don’t go into remission with dietary changes have tested for one or more infections using functional medicine testing” and
“Blastocystis hominis: This protozoal parasite is the most common parasite I’ve found in people with Hashimoto’s. In 2015, 35 percent of my clients tested positive for it.”
PS I’m not sure what a FACE is?
Trudy Scott says
Ah FACE = Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology. Invite him to watch the documentary and read her new book!
