Confused about Methylation and MTHFR?
MTHFR is one hot topic and many clients are getting their MTHFR results, but do not know what to do.
Methylation cycle abnormalities can predispose you to disease. The MTHFR SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) is at a key position in the methylation cycle and if not working properly, can affect the whole pathway, creating symptoms and disease, including mood issues like anxiety and depression. The good news is that nutritional protocols and lifestyle modifications can help tremendously.
Online Practitioner Training
My friend and colleague, Coleen Walsh, dubbed the “methyl queen” is doing an online Practitioner Training (for Nutritionists and Healthcare Practitioners) on MTHFR and Methylation on February 28, 2015 from 10am MST – 3pm MST, so you may get a better understanding of Methylation Pathways and how to better help your clients with these SNPs
This 5-hour presentation breaks down the biochemistry of these pathways, and discusses epigenetics and holistic protocols to give you a solid understanding of the subject.
Plus, when you purchase the event, you also will receive the recordings and 3 hours of bonus material! If you can’t make it at this day/time, you can still register and will get the materials a few days after the event.
A Bit About Coleen:
Coleen Walsh is a holistic and functional nutritionist that specializes in MTHFR and Methylation education and one on one client consultations. She is author of the forthcoming book, “Thriving with MTHFR: A guide for the everyday mutant!”, dubbed the “Methyl Queen” by colleagues and winner of the 2014 NANP Impact Award based on her research & education on MTHFR & Methylation. She trains and consults MDs, NDs, L.ACs, DOs and Nutritionists all over the United States and in Japan on the topic of MTHFR and Methylation and has completed hundreds of hours of additional research and education on these pathways. Coleen suffered from many degenerative and autoimmune diseases and helped heal herself after finding out about her MTHFR status, her passion is to educate and help support others along their journey towards health.
We met at the NANP/National Association of Nutrition Professionals conference last year and hit it off right away. I was so impressed with the work she was doing that I invited her to speak on season 1 of the Anxiety Summit.

Thank you so much Trudy! I really do appreciate you for sharing. It is such an important topic and there is so much confusion about it. I hope this training will help many practitioners understand these pathways! Very excited! I did the live training this past Saturday and received fantastic reviews.
“Coleen’s presentation on MTHFR and Methylation brings light to a heavily complex subject. She clearly knows just as much, if not more than, as doctors due to her dedication to the research and own personal experience. If you’re looking for clarity and a deeper understanding on MTHFR I highly recommend attending her seminars or purchasing the webinar version. To have her as a local resource in Denver is priceless! As a Nutrition Therapist myself, I’m so very happy to know I have a trusted colleague who I can refer clients to for this very dynamic condition.”

Hi Coleen and Trudy! I want to attend this training, but I am going to be at a retreat for part of the weekend. If I listen to the recording, will I still get the certificate? Also, I am most interested in this training because I have a patient with MS who I would like to get tested for the MTHFR mutation. Have you seen this mutation in a lot of MS patients? Thanks so much! I hope to tune into the webinar before my retreat and listen to the rest via the recording. Take care!
Trudy Scott says
Hi Caitlin
I’m pretty sure this will be fine (as she does have CEUs for the recording-only program) but will have Coleen hop on and comment.
I know Coleen will have more to say about MS but this is what I found with a quick pubmed search:
A 2013 paper looking at Tunisian patients: “Although our preliminary findings suggest no association between the MTHFR C677T variants and MS, there is evidence to suggest a significant association between the MTHFR A1298C polymorphisms and MS.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23523621
And a 2013 paper looking at Turkish patients “These results showed that T allele of C677T polymorphism was associated with MS susceptibility in Turkish population.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25203152

Hi Caitlin
Yes, anyone who takes either the Live Online training or views the recordings can do a certificate. There will be an exam that you have to take and pass to get the CEUs and the certificate showing completion.
The recordings will be ready online before March 9th. I will be emailing on Thursday the links and details for anyone who purchases.
I am waiting on the NANP for details on the exam required for CEUs – that should be ready right after the recordings around mid-March.
Autoimmune issues have a strong correlation with MTHFR and Methylation SNPs – some are more specific to certain populations while others have not been studied. It is such a new topic of research – I am sure more information and studies will be coming along in the future.
i look forward to “seeing” you online!

Just got another email testimonial …
“Coleen Walsh, I really enjoyed the presentation. So very informative, well organized! Your presentation of the methylation, BH4, folate, transulferation, and urea cycles and how they worked together was so very understandable. You integrated the biochemistry and related it to health conditions with such ease and grace. The information was presented in manageable pieces. You have researched this so thoroughly and your expertise of the subject was clearly reflected in your presentation and your responses to questions posed to the audience. You were very relaxed during the presentation and handled the information so well, stopped frequently to handle questions and took breaks at good intervals. I would highly recommend this presentation to anyone interested in going deeper into methylation than they have been able to with their own research! Thank you!”

Thanks for sharing this one too – this kind of feedback is so valuable for people who are considering doing this program
Looking forward to more on the transulferation and urea cycles too. And yeah to integrating the biochemistry and relating it to health conditions
Ruth Weinzettle says
Thanks for all of the great information Coleen. I do have a question about the supplement 5 MTHF. I thought you said in the interview that people with the MTHFR snip should start no higher than 200 mg of the supplement 5MTHF. Is this amount correct? That seems like a failry large amount of the supplement. Thanks for your help.
Coleen Walsh says
Hi Ruth!
I am glad you enjoyed it.
It really depends on the person and the individual differences, but some people can not go past 200 mcg (that is micrograms), where others can start much higher.
You are right 200 mg is a huge dose – my nose was stuffed up, so I hope it did not sound like mg…. some of the Rx for MTHFR go up to 15 mg, but many cannot handle that dose.
thanks for commenting!

Just heard the talk re-played on MTHR by Colleen because your newsletter mentioned it. How wonderful! I have heard Ben Lynch’s many times and had no idea someone else out there was available like that. (missed your online conference)
Just thank you for being out there. You don’t happen to know any practitioners in Boulder Colorado, do you? I am surprised at how hard it is to find someone “who knows more than I” about depression and anxiety cutting edge science. Saw Dr. James Greenblatt in Massachusetts twice and it was so lovely to have someone in the same room on the same page, but in the end, my family lives there, not me.
No need to respond—just glad I bumped into your stuff.

Trudy Scott says
So glad you bumped in to my stuff and enjoyed the MTHFR interview with Coleen! She is a real gem! And she is just down the road from you in Denver! She will also be doing another MTHFR webinar for non-practitioners in March. I know she does many talks locally so do check out her info.
Another great resource in Boulder is Izabella Wentz, PharmD – she is an Hashimoto’s expert and has a fabulous book called “The Root Cause.”
I agree, Dr Greenblatt is wonderful. He also spoke on season 1 of the Anxiety Summit (and FYI both season 1 and 2 are available for purchase if you want to hear other fabulous cutting-edge science-based interviews http://www.theanxietysummit.com)
I also do consult long distance so let me know if I can help in any way

Coleen Walsh says
Trudy said it all – but I did want to chime in!
I did a fair amount of training with Dr. Lynch, but have also learned from Dr Amy Yasko and have done extensive research on my own re: MTHFR?Methylation.
Yes, I am right near you in Denver. I am glad you enjoyed the recordings!
Theresa says
Collen,
Will there be written materials included in the course content? I am a frantic detailed note taker and I realize this material is deep.
Thank you
Theresa
Trudy Scott says
Absolutely Theresa – I hear you! I’m also a detailed note taker but love to have the material to go back to. Hope you can join in!
Coleen Walsh says
Hi Theresa
I provide you with a copy of the PPT on DVD and a methylation map to print out and refer to.
Coleen Walsh says
Also, I created a bundle for you so you get the live event and the recordings. Watch to your hearts content – when the recordings become available I provide you with the timing and outline to the recorded material – as a quick reference – so you are not scrolling through a ton of video material, if just need one section.
Patricia scalise says
was unable to attend seminar would love to obtain transcripts what would the cost be and how can I do that?
Trudy Scott says
Hi Patricia
The recordings/videos and powerpoint and other handouts will be made available in about a week. It’s the same price of $179 and simply purchase with the same link http://www.easywebautomation.com/app/?Clk=5393326 and they’ll be sent to you
I was on the 5hour 15 minute session live and it was excellent!

hi trudy, hi coleen, many thanks for a highly informative talk. the 5 hours just whizzed by. question re. neurotransmitter testing. have heard/read several leading health practitioners mention the lack of correlation between neurotransmitter testing and status. during the q.a. trudy mentioned she does neurotransmitter platelet testing. am not familiar with this, where can i learn more about platelet testing ? also, how should neurotransmitter metabolites in organic acid testing be interpretted ? which questionaires do you recommend to assess neurotransmitters ? thanks for your feedback. lisa
Trudy Scott says
Hi Lisa
I’m so pleased you enjoyed it! so did I – jam packed with information! Coleen did a fabulous job!
This is my feedback on neurotransmitter tetsing
I use the amino acid questionnaire exclusively, and do trials with amino acids and see my client’s response to trials – then we know if they need them. This is my questionnaire
http://www.everywomanover29.com/blog/amino-acids-mood-questionnaire-from-the-antianxiety-food-solution/
Platelet testing for serotonin, catecholamines (dopamine, norepi and epi) is useful if severe depression and anxiety, for children, for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Vitamin Diagnostics/HDRI offers this. It shows the status of the previous 3 months and research shows it has very similar results to cerebrospinal fluid results.
Plasma testing is next best and may be useful to give you a clue something is low.
I don’t find urinary neurotransmitter testing accurate/consistent enough and never use it. Many people come to me with results in hand and will not very favorable results from protocols. I blogged about it here https://www.everywomanover29.com/blog/urinary-neurotransmitter-testing-falls-short/
I am familiar with OAT markers but don’t use them very much since I use the amino acid questionnaire. I have seen them correlate with symptoms.
