Mira Calton CN and Jayson Calton PhD, micronutrient specialists, authors of Naked Calories, are interviewed by host of the Anxiety Summit, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of The Antianxiety Food Solution.
Micronutrients for Eliminating Anxiety
- The importance of micronutrient sufficiency and Mira’s osteoporosis
- The Calton’s 6 year, 135 country expedition to explore traditional diets
- The definition of naked calories
- How glyphosate/Roundup impacts mineral absorption in plants and thereby impacts us
- The new GM arctic apple and why it should be avoided
- How minerals compete for absorption
- Zinc/copper balance and why we want a multi with no copper
Here are some snippets from our interview:
When food is picked early it doesn’t have all the micronutrients
Spraying our food with glyphosate (Roundup) is starving our food of nutrients because it doesn’t allow the roots to absorb minerals from the soil so the plant is less micronutrient-rich
When you sweat, you become more deficient in micronutrients
The Arctic Apple doesn’t brown when it’s cut open and looks visually good but it’s really rotten and has lost the micronutrient value
They are really passionate about this topic of Arctic apples – as you heard in the interview and as you’ll see in this excellent Arctic apple blog
There is a relationship between micronutrients and there is this web of competition. Here are a few examples Mira and Jayson talked about:
Iron is the most competitive
Zinc and copper compete for absorption
Magnesium can affect zinc absorption
The zinc-copper discussion was fascinating. Mira and Jayson mentioned copper/iron position of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine: Doctors Urge FDA to Ban Multivitamins Containing Iron or Copper
The Physicians Committee (for Responsible Medicine) urging the Food and Drug Administration to require vitamin manufacturers to reformulate common multivitamins that contain iron or copper, due to possible links with Alzheimer’s disease.
I wholeheartedly agree with this concern about copper and iron in multivitamins. My concern is with copper connection to lower zinc in anxiety and depression. (Just a heads up: I’m not on board with the Physicians Committee’s dietary recommendations on vegetarianism.)
Here are two of the papers I mentioned at the end of the interview
Zinc prevents sickness behavior induced by lipopolysaccharides after a stress challenge in rats.
Lipopolysaccharide or LPS is an endotoxin that mimics infection by gram-negative bacteria
Zinc treatment was able to prevent sickness behavior in LPS-exposed rats after the stress challenge, restoring exploratory/motor behaviors, communication, and TNF-α levels similar to those of the control group.
They found that zinc treatment appears to be beneficial for sick animals when they are facing risky/stressful situations
In the present study, we investigated the effects of chromium picolinate (CrP) on behavioural and biochemical parameters in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) induced depression and anxiety in rats.
The results showed that treatment of CrP produced significant antidepressant effect
It was also found that CrP (8 and 16μg/mL) significantly increased 5-HT [serotonin] concentration in the discrete regions of brain (cortex and cerebellum).
On the other hand, the plasma corticosterone level was significantly decreased with CrP (16μg/mL).
The results suggested that increase in the concentration of 5-HT/serotonin and decrease in plasma corticosterone levels could be responsible for improvement in symptoms of depression and anxiety in CUMS induced depression and anxiety in rats.

Fantastic presentation. I am definitely going to purchase the Carlton’s books. I have a question about taking Chromium . I have been taking Chromium and I am a little concerned that it decreases cortisol levels since my saliva levels are already too low at all times of the day and night. I don’t have any blood sugar issues. Does anyone know if your cortisol levels are already too low will Chromium decrease them even further?
Kathy says
Thanks for such an informative presentation.
I’m looking forward to reading your new book.
I want to understand my nutrient deficiencies.
Can you recommend a good Lab and test?

Very nice presentation! I loved the competition discussion between micronutrients. I’m currently taking Tirosint for hypothyroidism. Do you believe that with the correct balance of micronutrients, hypothyroidism can be reversed and the thyroid can heal and function normally again? I don’t feel well on the replacement. I eat very simple, wholesome and raw foods. I’m not over weight or have any major complications.
Thank you for all your time and research.

How frightening! If we eat enough ‘artic apples’ do you suppose that our own DECAY will become invisible, when we inevitably develop disease… No wonder so many people don’t notice their disease until stage 4 (end stage)..like Mira!
Also, irradiated tomatoes have a shelf life of several years, but those tomatoes cannot reproduce…how many generations have to eat irradiated ‘food’ before our families are sterile?? (Is this some gov approved /monitored population control?) Who and is allowing this and why?
In only one generation, most of our people will be raised on GMO!
thx 4 helping us raise the conscienceless of our young adult children!! The Next generation of parents..

Excellent informative session. Thank-you so much Trudy for interviewing this wonderful couple. My Question is how does one test for a deficiency for zinc and other vitamins??How also does one get tested for copper and heavy metals??
Thank-you and God Bless

Great information! Thank you. I would love to know how your micronutrient status can be monitored. I believe all doctors should check your levels on a regular basis. I love my doc but she just doesn’t know anything about nutrition. Hopefully, patients can change the future of medicine to make it less mess about medications and more about nutrition therapy.

If Mira was able to overcome osteoporosis, did she use Strontium? I was told by 2 of the foremost bone disease docs to use the infusion. I refused. I am due for a bone density soon.

Wonderful, thanks!

We also get copper from organic farming which allows copper to be sprayed on organic produce. One of the most popular organic EVOO’s from California sold at farmer’s markets and stores sprays with it and they do not have to disclose it.

Hi Mira & Jason. It is rare that we get the chance to ask manufactures about the ingredients in their products. I’d like to try Nutreince since it takes into account micronutrient competition, plus I relate to Mira’s fatigue from taking so many capsules!
Would you please help educate me on some of your ingredients choices?
1. “Natural” Flavors and Colors (What is this and is it GMO, pesticide-free?)
2. Fat soluble vitamins (If you take Nutreince daily could you end up with too much and get a toxic effect?)
3. Selenium (Heard if you have mercury toxicity, selenium binds it into the brain and should not be supplemented – any thoughts?)
4. Alpha Lipoic Acid (Also read that this is used to detox mercury from the brain and should not be taken until toxic burden of body is minimal – any thoughts?)
5. Silicon Dioxide (Is this synthetic amorphous silicon and what is the purpose?)
6. Grapeseed extract (Side effects: headache, itchy scalp, dizziness, & nausea?)
7. Citric Acid (Are there any cons to consuming it?)
8. CoQ10 (Is there a downside to taking more if your levels of this are good?)
Also, do both of you take both powders on a daily basis or how often do you take it (vs. trying to eat a nutrient dense diet?)
With Gratitude, Lisa
Karaina says
These are great questions, Lisa! I would like to know the answers as well. And, can you share the source about selenium binding mercury to the brain? That is a scary thought!
Thanks!
Karaina
Lisa says
Thanks, Karaina. Hopefully Mira&Jason will get back to us! Trudy also said she was going to look into Nutreince on the closing call so hopefully we will learn more.
I don’t remember where I learned about selenium binding mercury to the brain but if I find it I will post again. I do know that it had to be in one of the two books I read on Mercury:
1. Hal Huggs It’s All in Your Head: The Link Between Mercury Amalgams & Illness and
2. Andrew Cutler Amalgam Illness, Diagnosis and Treatment : What You Can Do to Get Better, How Your Doctor Can Help

About iron being the most (known) competitive micronutrient – would that be an issue when using cast iron pans for cooking certain foods?
Thanks!
Jennie Parham says
Trudy,
Thank you for an excellent summit. I have always been interested in anything pertaining to health but I have learned so much I did not know.
Did you get to check into The Colton supplement? I am interested but a little skeptical since it is hard to prove the claims are true.
David says
My question concerns chromium and serotonin. As your article includes a reference to chromium affecting serotonin levels, is there any concern related to too much serotonin activity from taking chromium along with tryptophan? Thanks in advance for any insights.
Trudy Scott says
David
I’m not aware of this being an issue and I’m curious why you ask
David says
Trudy, thank you for your reply! The above article states “It was also found that CrP (8 and 16μg/mL) significantly increased 5-HT [serotonin] concentration in the discrete regions of brain (cortex and cerebellum).” My understanding is that it is not recommended for a person to take serotonin-boosting medications or supplements at the same time they are taking tryptophan as that can increase serotonin too much and potentially lead to serotonin syndrome. I know you may not be able to say definitively but does this seem like a valid concern with chromium, and if so, what would be the upper safe limits of chromium intake if a person were also taking tryptophan?
Trudy Scott says
David
I have not found it to be an issue and have clients use tryptophan based on their unique needs. So if they are also using chromium they may find they need less tryptophan to get the same benefits.
