This is day 7 of the Anxiety Summit. Dr. Izabella Wentz – PharmD, author of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause is interviewed by host of the Anxiety Summit, Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of The Antianxiety Food Solution.
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Anxiety
- Why hypothyroidism can sometimes feel like anxiety and the definition of autoimmunity
- How common is it and an overview of the best testing
- The role of the gut and food intolerances
- The key nutrients: zinc, iodine, selenium and more
Here is a great gem from my interview with Izabella:
When the thyroid is attacked by the immune system like in Hashimoto’s it results in the breakdown of the thyroid tissue and thyroid hormones are rushed into the bloodstream, causing a transient overactive thyroid and anxiety symptoms.”
Remember that the thyroid needs to be functioning well for the amino acids to be effective.
I highly recommend Izabella’s book Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause and love Izabella’s great content-packed Facebook page Thyroid Lifestyle

Hello,
Is there a way to be able to stop a presentation then start it again from your stopping point or do you have to start all over again? I was only able to listen half way to one then tried to get it to go up to that point but it won’t.
Thank you,
Brynn

Izabella, thank you so much for your great talk!. I recently had my thyroid checked. My TSH was 1.77. My FT4, FT3, T4 and T3 were all within normal ranges. However, my TPO was 9 times higher than normal and my thyroglobulin antibody was slightly elevated. The doctor said I could have chronic thyroid disease and to come back in 4-6 months to get my levels tested again. According to you and the presenters of the two thyroid summits that I listened to, I am assuming I have Hashimoto’s. My question is: do I need to be on medication or is it okay to put your suggestions into play and wait for another blood test like my doctor recommended? I DO NOT want my thyroid to be further compromised. I am already off gluten, grains, sugar and have just gone off milk. I did have hyperthyroid after the birth of my 6th child 13 years ago. Was on medication for that for 2 years and was able to stop.

Hi Jemi
We can’t give you specific advice via the blog but my recommendation is to find a holistic/integrative practitioner to work with. I always have my clients get the Hashimotos diaganosis from their doctor and with labs like this that should not be a problem.
If you were my client I would look for other things that may be impacting the antibodies and not simply have you wait 4-6 months.
As Izabella mentioned many people have phases that look like hyperthyroid when in fact it is really due to the Hashimotos. We only mentioned a few in the interview – Izabella’s book goes into more detail
I’ll also ask Izabella to pop on and comment too

Hi, I am from the USA but currently residing in South Africa on a temporary residency permit. I have Hashimoto’s along with relapses of vertigo and tinnitus. I am looking for a Functional Medicine Doctor or at least one who will approach any issues that way. Would like to make contact with one before it is needed. Currently I am in Vanderbijlpark but hope to relocate either in the Durban area or near Kruger. Any referral or suggestion on finding one in these areas is greatly appreciated. That may also determine where I relocate to. Kind Regards, Wende

Hello Trudy Scott: I wonder if you can give me information on this subject or have an archived article about it. My 24 year old daughter is fairly healthy, but I’ve noticed that her eyes can get glossy & slightly bulged temporarily when she doesn’t eat properly for a period of time.
I noticed the same condition in one of my brothers 45 years old) when he would occasionally fast to better his health. Because I’ve seen this condition clear itself up when they are eating more balanced meals, I’ve concluded that it is probably caused by a nutritional deficiency.
Neither of them have had thyroid problems. Both are in good physical health usually.

I’m afraid I don’t have an answer for you and suggest getting it checked by a doctor. Bulging eyes can be a sign of a thyroid disorder, often hyperthyroidism (over-active)

I have my clients do the amino acid questionnaire and a trial of the respective amino acids – one at a time so they know what is doing what
https://www.everywomanover29.com/blog/anxiety-amino-acids-overview/.
I’m not using the Dutch test yet but am learning about it.
Of course diet and lifestyle changes are key too too – real food, quality animal protein, eat to control blood sugar, no gluten/sugar/caffeine, address gut health, exercise etc, plus considering high cortisol
